PPC M1 and M1-X 5.0 Comparison test

Posted in

PPC extended it’s popular M1 with more models. They released the M1-X a while back, which is orientated for use in waves compared to the regular M1.
Last year they also did some upgrades to the M1, the biggest upgrade of them, new updated carbon handles. Now these are much thinner, made out of 1 peace, with a very solid connection making it a very stiff. Also the handles have become longer. Very useful when you have long arms like me.
These upgrades can also be found in the new M1-X.

Biggest difference I found between the 2 models, was the power/pull of the wing. The M1 will pull you on to your foil with ease in lights winds. Where with the M1-X you really need to do the work yourself for early lift-off. If you are not used to this, this means you won’t get on to foil in very light breezes. In such case you just need a bit more wind to get going or a larger wing.
When the wind got stronger, I really found the M1-X lighter to control. Where the feel of the M1 can get a bit mighty when powered up and your going full speed.
All other differences between the 2 wings are small. The M1-X follows you along a bit easier and can be pulled through the wind a bit easier.
In terms of speed I haven’t tested the differences. For use in most conditions when freeriding, or playing along in the waves there shouldn’t be too much difference speed wise.
Both models jump very well!

You can’t go wrong with either PPC wing if you prefer wings with a very direct feel. Both are very solid wings with a beautiful finish!
If you have experience in pumping your wing on foil in light breezes and prefer to ride waves. Get the M1-X. If you want to get on foil easily and don’t butter that much, cruse around, play and ride some, the M1 will suit your needs.

More about the PPC M1 wing can be found on a previous review.
